Developing Critical Minds for Critical Times

Friday evening workshop:
Ernest Morrell, recently elected vice-president of NCTE, is the incoming director of the Institute for Urban Minority Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He works with adolescents, drawing on their involvement with popular culture to develop academic literacy.
Saturday morning keynote:
Sara Kajder, Ph.D., teaches English at Shadyside Academy in Pittsburgh, PA. A former asst. professor at Virginia Tech, her teaching is anchored in helping students connect out-of-school with in-school literacies. She received the National Technology Leadership Fellowship.
Friday luncheon:
Laura Resau’s latest novel is The Queen of Water (co-written by María Virginia Farinango). Her previous novels have earned the IRA YA Fiction Award, the Américas Award, and a spot on Oprah’s Kids’ Book List. Resau lives with her husband and young son in Colorado.
Featured Speaker: Jovan Mays

Mays will present 2 breakout sessions on Saturday about how to engage kids with slam poetry.
